Massage for Achilles Rupture Post Surgery
Let’s start with the what our client said about his experience, then we will get into what we did.
“I went to Massage Alchemist a few months post surgery from an Achilles tendon rupture. Jamie did an amazing job working with me. She spoke with me before starting to understand what happened when I got injured and the issues I was still experiencing. Jamie communicated with me the entire time making sure everything felt ok. My mobility increased after the massage and the pain/soreness was essentially gone. Highly recommended!!!”
After surgery for Achilles rupture, the foot and ankle are immobilized so the tendon can heal. As you can imagine, the foot and ankle don’t move well afterwards. In this case, our client had already been cleared to go back to work. He was still in physical therapy, trying to return to his normal range of motion.
We really enjoy working with people who are also completing physical therapy. The two modalities work together really well and physical therapists are often surprised when a client returns to them after having seen someone in our office.
Jamie only had one session with this client. He was still struggling with mobility and his physical job requires he be able to move well on his feet. She treated him by working from knee to foot in the affected leg.
The difference in how we approach massage is simple. We use targeted releases. This isn’t a shotgun scattered approach to massage. We know what the individual muscles do and we spend our time freeing the areas that will give the client the biggest result in the shortest period of time.
When clients are cleared by their doctors but still having issues, we work slowly and deeply in these trouble spots to free up the tissue and get it moving again. We incorporate range of motion and resistance techniques as well. These sessions don’t feel very good, but neither does physical therapy!
The big win was when we got a follow up message from our client a couple days later. He said his physical therapist tested his range of motion. It had increased by 30% since his last visit!
Many people would greatly benefit from having deep, targeted massage post surgery after their doctor gives them the OK. We see people recover their range of motion faster and have shorter recovery times over all. If you think massage might be beneficial in your situation, feel free to give us a call!
