Lasting lower back pain is one of the most common issues we treat. Massage can be extremely effective in reducing or eliminating chronic low back pain. Whether or not it will be the right path for you depends on a few different factors.
Let’s start by saying any time we treat someone with long lasting lower back pain we are usually cautiously optimistic we can make a big impact for them. The reason we are able to maintain this outlook is most people have never had their upper legs, glutes, and low back released as thoroughly and as deeply as we work. So 9 times out of 10 people see a significant reduction in their low back pain from the very first visit.
Of course, the question remains of how long we can keep the client out of pain. More often than not, if the person has not had a significant injury to the hip or spine or had a surgery in this area they are very likely to have their low back pain go away completely. When we run into stubborn cases it is usually because there’s been some type of significant trauma to the lower back like a fall, sports injury, or car accident.
People who have suffered from these types of traumas can also fully recover from lower back pain but there are variables which can prevent somebody from making a full recovery. The odds of a full recovery with zero pain go down based on the type of surgery the person underwent, the severity of the injury, any complications from the surgery, or repeated injuries to the same area over the course of a few years.
Another very common question we get is whether or not a person can be pain-free if they have bulging and or herniated discs. The answer is yes, again depending on how severe the herniation or bulge is. A large number of our clients who have disc bulges or herniations walk around pain-free most of the time.
The only way to know how far down the road to recovery we can get you with bodywork is to schedule an appointment and see for yourself. Many of our clients get completely better. People who don’t get back to 100% often reach a plateau and level off. People who reach this plateau tend to go in one of two different directions. The first option: the issue has been surgically corrected already and they need to be on a massage maintenance program of once a month more or less. Or option two: they need to go back to their doctor for further imaging to see if anything has changed since their initial injury. If you find yourself in this situation, we are here to help and answer any questions you have.
